Our electric drill for paleomagnetic rock sampling, based on a battery powered chain saw, is equipped with an adapter piece for a 1 inch drill bit and a quick connection for cooling water.
Compared to gas powered drills, it is lightweight and comfortable to use. Normally, there are no safety restrictions on electric drilling machines in airplanes.
It is powered by two widely available 18 V standard batteries (brand: Makita, not sold by us), which can, normally up to a capacity of 5 Ah, be brought in hand luggage (6 Ah also available). Due to reduced vibrations, soft sediment drill cores are better preserved.
